Dr. Shilpa Londhe has been studying relationships between health policy and the social determinants of health as a postdoctoral fellow at Yale School of Public Health. Her paper examining the influence of Medicaid expansion under the Affordable Care Act of 2010 on county-level rates of food insecurity was published in the Journal of Health Care for the Poor and Underserved in the October issue.
Social determinants of health (SDOH) are the non-medical drivers of health which significantly impact women’s health and the range of services that are accessible to them. Dr. Londhe’s research has focused on food insecurity to illustrate how health insurance can serve as a financial buffer, reduce financial insecurity, and promote the ability for low-income families to meet basic needs. She seeks to explore the impacts on women and families in future projects.
